FightersOnly.com is reporting that UFC middleweights Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva will not be acting as coaches on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter reality show.
UFC President Dana White had indicated that the two fighters were on a short list of candidates for the positions in an earlier interview, but recently recanted that statement during press rounds in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he flew to announce the UFC’s eventual return to South America this week.
Sonnen and Silva were thought to be a solid option for the coaching spots as they have been cultivating a rivalry for a few months now that began when Silva confronted Sonnen during a ride in a UFC company van. Silva took issue with some of the outlandish statements that Sonnen made during the promotion of his UFC 117 fight with middleweight champion Anderson Silva and made that very clear to Sonnen. Since then, the two have both exchanged verbal jabs publicly.
Also according to Fighters Only, Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir will likely not be taking the positions either, despite White’s earlier indications to the contrary. The two would have coached as a prelude to their rubber match, which fans have reacted negatively towards since White mentioned it as a possibility.
And finally, according to Fighters Only’s sources, bantamweight stars Urijah Faber and Miguel Torres likely won’t be taking the spots either. White had mentioned that the two fighters could end up as coaches in promotion of the UFC’s addition of the bantamweight and featherweight classes.
White has said that he will reveal the TUF 13 coaches tomorrow in a press release.
