Sherdog.com is reporting that the light heavyweight title fight between champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Rashad Evans has finally been pinned with a date. The match up will headline UFC 129, which will take place this coming March 19th at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
The light heavyweight match up between Tito Ortiz and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira could also take place on the card.
Rua earned the UFC 205-pound belt after a rocky start in the promotion which can be partially attributed to recurring knee injuries. He fought Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida for the belt after defeating Mark Coleman and Chuck Liddell and lost a very controversial decision to his fellow Brazilian. When they met again in an immediate rematch, Rua left no doubt in anyone’s mind that he was the clear victor, as he knocked Machida out in the first round. Rua underwent another knee surgery following the big win over Machida; there had been much speculation as to when the Rua-Evans bout would occur due to “Shogun’s” recovery from this latest round of knee surgeries. The former PRIDE FC champion holds a professional record of 19-4.
Former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans lost the title he earned by knocking out Forrest Griffin by getting knocked out himself courtesy Lyoto Machida. Evans would bounce back however, defeating both Thiago Silva and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson by unanimous decision to earn his latest title shot. The Greg Jackson-trained fighter holds a professional record of 15-1-1.
