Following this past weekend’s enormously successful UFC 124: St. Pierre Vs. Koscheck 2 broadcast, which benefitted from the hype generated during the two main event fighters’ turn as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter, UFC President Dana White spoke with MMAFighting.com and revealed the names he is kicking around as possible coaches on the next season of TUF.
Two men that fans have been clamoring to see in the position are middleweights Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva, who have been cultivating a rivalry since Silva called Sonnen out for some of the things he said during the lead up to his August bout with middleweight champ Anderson Silva. Sonnen was recently involved in a confusing steroids scandal, where he was found not guilty of abusing performance enhancing drugs, but guilty of improper disclosure. His suspension was cut in half which, as MMAFighting points out, would free him up for the obligatory post-season coaches scrap.
White also expressed interest in seeing former WEC superstars and current UFC bantamweights Miguel Torres and Urijah Faber coach the show, as a way to draw interest into the recently absorbed lighter weight classes. There are some scheduling issues which may present themselves should these two be chosen, namely Torres’ scheduled UFC 126 bout.
Lastly, White indicated to MMAFighting that he is still interested in putting together the Brock Lesnar-Frank Mir rubber match and that having them coach The Ultimate Fighter could be a good way to build up interest for the bout. Mir has previously coached the show, opposite Antonio Rodrigo Nogeuira on the eighth season.
The UFC boss told MMAFighting that he isn’t sure which pair of fighters will take the spots and that whatever decision he comes to, he knows he has to make it quickly.
