Josh Koscheck will get his chance for revenge tonight when he takes on UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre for a shot at the French-Canadian’s belt.
Koscheck and GSP met once before in 2007, where St. Pierre shocked Koscheck by out-wrestling the former NCAA standout en route to a unanimous decision win. Speaking during the UFC 124 media conference call, Koscheck questioned St. Pierre’s mettle and his approach to this evening’s bout. (Props to MMAJunkie.com)
“Is St. Pierre going to be a so-called ‘boring Greg Jackson fighter’ and just take me down? Or is Georges St. Pierre going to have the balls to stand toe to toe with me?” the American Kickboxing Academy product asked.
Though St. Pierre has said that is going to be looking for the finish and has been training with renowned boxing coach Freddie Roach in preparation for this bout, Koscheck believes that “Rush” will not be willing to engage with him.
“I definitely know how Georges St-Pierre wants to fight,” he said. “Regardless of who’s he’s working with and what he brings to the table, I know that his game plan is obviously going to be (to) use his speed and get inside and try to take me down.”
Koscheck and St. Pierre coached opposite one another on the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter and Koscheck used that outlet to antagonize St. Pierre at every turn and drum up more interest in the fight. He also said that he will have to live up to his trash talk and has been preparing steadfastly in order to do so.
“I talked a lot of crap on ‘The Ultimate Fighter,'” he said. “I got under Georges’ skin. You know, and he says that he’s at his best. What a great story, right? Now, I got to go out there, and I got to perform. I’ve never had any pressure on myself to go out and win. I train hard. I’m a competitor. I love the fight, and it’s what I do. And I don’t need motivation to go out there and train. But God, I love to have a good story behind it.”
UFC 124 is underway from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Koscheck and St. Pierre will fight in the main event.
