Ariel Helwani recently reported through Versus.com that the UFC has acquired the services of
Japanese featherweight fighter Michihiro Omigawa.
Helwani reports that Omigawa will be taking on Team Alpha Male fighter Chad Mendes in a featherweight bout, possibly at UFC 126. The bout will mark Omigawa’s first bout back in the UFC since dropping two lightweight contests in a row to Matt Wiman and Thiago Tavares in 2007 and 2008, respectively.
Following that two-fight losing streak, Omigawa dropped to the featherweight division where lost his first bout to “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung.
The accomplished judoka would find his stride at 145-pounds though, posting three wins in a row after a draw against Shintaro Ishiwatari and then five more on top of a decision loss to Masanori Kanehara.
Omigawa holds notable wins over LC Davis, The Ultimate Fighter 12 contestant Nam Phan, Marlon Sandro, Cole Escovedo, and Micah Miller.
His official record stands at 12-8-1; he trains out of the Yoshida Dojo under Japanese MMA legends Hidehiko Yoshida and Kazuhiro Nakamura.
