This weekend, Josh Koscheck will attempt to defeat UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre in a fight that has had months of build up thanks to their respective stints as opposing coaches on the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter. On the show, Koscheck played up his role as a heel and has gotten under many fans’ skin–not to mention “GSP’s.” Speaking during the UFC 124 conference call, Koscheck explained that he simply plays a role to generate interest in his bouts–and thereby income.
“What I said on the show was for entertainment and nothing more than that…I’m about making money,” Koscheck said. “People will tune in on Saturday because they want to see St. Pierre kick my ass… I talked a lot of crap on The Ultimate Fighter…I got under St. Pierre’s skin…he says he’s at his best. What a great story right? Now I gotta go out there and I gotta perform.”
Koscheck also claimed that his approach to promoting a fight would not work against him were an opponent to try and give him a taste of his own medicine.
“I don’t need someone to get under my skin to train harder,” he said. “I’m always motivated to train. I don’t need any motivation from GSP to want to kick his ass.”
In regards to what he expects from “GSP” come Saturday night, Koscheck said that it depends on which “GSP” shows up to the fight.
“Is ‘GSP’ going to be a boring Greg Jackson fighter and take me down or is ‘GSP’ going to have the balls to stand with me? We’re going to see,” he said.
Koscheck also addressed St. Pierre’s training with renowned boxing coach Freddie Roach and Roach’s comment that “GSP” would win the fight by left hook knockout.
“Working with Roach is all good and all but (he) can’t work on strengthening your chin…,” Koscheck said. “My mom predicts a second round left-hook KO for me.”
