As per usual, the UFC handed out three fight bonuses to the fighters who competed at last night’s The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale; this time around the awards were worth $30,000 apiece.
In one of the first featherweight bouts under the UFC banner, TUF 12 contestant Nam Phan and former UFC lightweight Leonard Garcia earned Fight of the Night honors for their entertaining three round scrap. There is currently some controversy surrounding the fight, as many viewing from home or actually in attendance at the event scored the bout clearly for Phan.
145-pound fighter Pablo Garza ushered in the UFC featherweight division in a big way Saturday night as, in the actual first UFC featherweight contest, he knocked out Fredson Paixão via vicious knee in the first round. The impressive finish was enough for him to be awarded the Knockout of the Night bonus and give people a preview of the kind of excitement that can be expected from the smaller weight classes.
Cody McKenzie became well-known for his adept usage of the guillotine choke during his time as a contestant on TUF 12. The Alaskan native showed anyone who didn’t watch the season just how well he can apply his go-to move when he choked out cast mate Aaron Wilkinson in the first round of their lightweight bout via guillotine; this marking the tenth straight fight he has won by guillotine choke. McKenzie took home Submission of the Night honors for the finish.
The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale went down last night at the Palms Resort Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada and saw Jonathan Brookins defeat Michael Johnson to become the latest TUF winner.
