Legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach has been known to train MMA fighters for some time. He has worked with some of the top names in both sports, including UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre. Roach has been assisting St. Pierre with the preparations for his upcoming title defense against Josh Koscheck and recently told Fight Hub TV that he thinks St. Pierre can use what he has taught him to defeat Koscheck.
“The thing is with Georges, he needs to loosen up a little bit and be more fluent cause he’s very strong of course, but he was a little bit stiff. So, I’m getting him looser, more elusive, more head movement,” Roach said of training St. Pierre. “He did very well; he’s really improved quite a bit. Koscheck, he jumps in from far away, I tell him how to not pull away from that and beat that on the counter with a punch. I told him that I think he’ll knock him out with the left hook in that fight and I hope it happens because we’ve set up a great game plan for the way Koscheck jumps in. I can make that public because he can’t stop from doing it, it’s one of his habits.”
However this fight ends, Roach and St. Pierre will be continuing their relationship; the boxing guru told Fight Hub not to be surprised if they start seeing his face amongst GSP’s cornermen.
“Yes, they want me to go to Montreal and they want me to work the corner in his fights and so forth,” Roach said. “If I can make someone a better fighter–I don’t care what sport it is, it doesn’t matter to me. I respect all sports. If I can make someone a better fighter… That’s what I live for.”
St. Pierre will attempt to put into use what Roach has taught him this December 11th at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada; where he and Koscheck will headline UFC 124.
