Fabricio Werdum: Strikeforce Wants Me To Take On Overeem Next

With recovery from his recent elbow surgery going well, Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum is looking to get back into the cage in the early part of next year. There has been much speculation concerning who Werdum will face in his first bout since defeating MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko. Speaking with CagePotato.com recently, Werdum revealed that he will likely face Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem next–even if there is another fight in which he is more interested.

“Before the Fedor fight, I signed for three more fights in Strikeforce. I’m so happy in Strikeforce now,” said Werdum. “Scott Coker is a very good guy, very good boss. [He] said maybe I fight in March… [He] wants me to fight for the belt versus Overeem.”

Though the powers-that-be at Strikeforce may want to match him up against Overeem in a bout for the title, Werdum feels it to be only fair that he grant Emelianenko a rematch first.

“I like the idea of maybe a rematch because Fedor is a very good fighter, very good guy,” he said. “I like Fedor because he never talks before the fight. I like Fedor. Maybe because he gave me the opportunity to fight him…I would give the opportunity for Fedor maybe next time. But maybe I’m fighting Overeem, I don’t know. Now I’m just training. My focus now is on my training because I want to be back 100 percent.”

Werdum last appeared in action this past June 26th at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum, where he dethroned “The Last Emperor” with a first round triangle choke.
