Kenny Florian Talks Evan Dunham, Shoring Up Weaknesses

Top UFC lightweight Kenny “Ken-Flo” Florian will be looking to rebound from a loss and work his way back towards a title shot again when he takes on Evan Dunham in the main event of UFC: Fight for the Troops 2 this January 22nd. Speaking with recently, Florian revealed his thoughts on Dunham as an opponent and also detailed what he has done in training to shore up the weaknesses exposed in his last outing.

“I think Evan’s a fantastic opponent,” Florian said. “I consider him still undefeated, I thought he won that fight against Sean Sherk. Just a real well-rounded and dangerous opponent. He’s the kind of guy I want to face, I consider him top ten in the world. I think it’s a great step back in the right direction, which is hopefully back towards the top.”

While Florian recently lost a definitive unanimous decision to current number one contender Gray Maynard, Even Dunham is coming off of a controversial split decision loss to former champion Sean Sherk. In the Dunham-Sherk fight, the 28-year old Dunham showed grit and a proficiency in every area of the game. In Florian’s fight with Maynard, “The Bully’s” stellar wrestling kept Florian from establishing his vaunted striking game and “Ken-Flo” explained the preparations he has been taking to ensure that Dunham won’t be able to capitalize on what Maynard was.

“I changed it a lot,” Florian said of his training. “I still assume that I’m going to face the best wrestler in the division so I’ve been really upping the amount of wrestling I’ve been doing. Doing a lot of Jiu-jitsu, a lot off my back. And, of course, back to the regular schedule as far as striking goes.”

UFC: Fight for the Troops 2 is taking place at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, and will be the third event that the UFC has held on a military base as a benefit for the troops.
