UFC 123: Quinton Jackson Vs. Lyoto Machida

Machida enters the cage first, to a Linkin Park track. “Rampage” enters looking mean, letting off his trademark howl to the strains of the PRIDE FC theme. Herb Dean will be the third man in the cage.

Round 1: Jsckson walking Machida down early, Machida moving as usual. Machida with an inside leg kick. Machida whiffs on a kick. Another. Machida looking to land leg kicks, while “Rampage” looks for a way inside. Jackson attempts to bull forward, but Machida avoids most of the offense. Jackson is swinging for the fences, he closes the distance and gets Machida pressed against the cage. Jackson using foot stomps and thigh punches to distract Machida. They break and Jackson swings like a wild man. Machida misses on a knee and Jackson counters. Jackson takes a body kick and avoids a right hand, pressing Machida against the cage again. Machida turns off of the cage. Jackson using footwork to stay within range on Machida, cutting off the cage. Jackson rushes forward with punches with ten to go. scores the round 10-9 for Jackson

Round 2: Jackson backs Machida against the wall early, but “The Dragon” is still moving well. He lands a body kick. Machida tries for a trip but Jackson avoids and presses him against the cage. Machida complains of a low blow and the action is halted. They restart in the middle. They clinch again and Jackson lands a knee. They end up against the cage again, but his time Jackson gets a reversal and lands a nice takedown on Machida. They get back to their feet and Machida turns Jackson on the fence. They break and Jackson barely misses with a right on the break. Machida rushes in for the clinch this time. Jackson gets double underhooks and lands a nice knee. Machida tries for a head kick that is blocked. Jackson with a nice uppercut, right hand combination that pops Machida’s head up. Machida goes for the clinch again and they hit the fence. Machida working for the takedown but Jackson avoids it. Jackson shucks him off with ten seconds to go. Jackson slips almost at the bell and blocks a high kick. Difficult fight to score. scores the round 10-9 for Jackson

Round 3: A leg kick lands for “Rampage.” Machida returns the favor. Jackson chasing Machida, lands a few punches. They exchange and Machida sticks “Rampage” with a punch that has him backing up. Jackson recovers and fires back but Machida gets the takedown, sitting in half guard. Machida establishes the mount after faking a kimura with 1:30 to go. Machida is looking for an armbar. Jackson goes for his patented slam but Machida gives up the hold and they hit their feet, shortly after hitting the fence. Machida pulls Jackson to the ground and then rolls for a leg lock, then tries for the beginnings of an omoplata. scores the round 10-9 for Machida

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson defeated Lyoto Machida via split-decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Jackson says his aggression is the main reason he won, crediting Machida for “whooping his ass.” Calls Machida “the man,” and says a rematch is in order.

Machida says that he did the best he could and that the judges saw what they saw. Machida agrees that a rematch is in order, the crowd voices its support.
