Penn enters looking pumped up, to his regular Hawaiian tune. He’s wearing a shirt that reads “A.I. Would Scrap,” in memory of professional surfer Andy Irons, who passed away recently from complications related to Dengue fever. Hughes sticks to “A Country Boy Can Survive” by Hank Williams, looking like he’s ready to go to work. Miragliotta will ref this bout.

Round 1: Both men look fired up. Penn landing early. Penn catches a body kick but lets it go. Penn lands a right hand that drops Hughes, he follows him to the ground and pounds away. It’s over!

An emotional Penn runs out of the Octagon, eventually re-entering.

BJ Penn defeated Matt Hughes via knockout at 0:21 of round 1.

Penn: “I love you Detroit! I love you UFC! Matt Hughes, you’re my idol, you’ve always been my idol, thank you!”

Hughes says Penn hit him very hard, he wasn’t just clipped. Hughes says he had a great training camp and that he was very excited for this fight. “I don’t know what the plan is now.”
