MMAJunkie.com has learned that Italian UFC middleweight slugger Alessio “Legionarius” Sakara has been forced out of his co-main event bout with Jorge Rivera at the last minute.
Mere hours before Sakara was slotted to face off against Rivera in the co-main event of UFC 122, the fighter succumbed to a flu-like illness which eventually forced him off of the card. Apparently, Sakara was intent on competing despite his illness but UFC officials called the bout as “Legionarius” threw up backstage.
This marks the second time that Sakara and Rivera have had a bout scrapped, as the two were originally scheduled to face off at UFC 118 back in August but Rivera was forced to withdraw with a broken arm. Welterweights Duane “Bang” Ludwig and Nick Osipczak will take their place in the co-main event.
UFC 122 is going down at the König Pilsener Arena in Oberhausen, Germany and features a number one middleweight contender’s bout between Yushin Okami and Nate Marquardt. The winner will be awarded the chance at facing off against the winner of the upcoming title fight between champ Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort.
