Martin Kampmann Discusses Disappointing Loss To Jake Shields

17-4 UFC welterweight fighter Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann recently saw his two-fight winning streak snapped by Octagon newcomer Jake Shields, who will now go on to fight the UFC Welterweight Champion on the strength of his accomplishments outside of the promotion (Shields holds several notable wins over top competition, has held belts in two different weight classes in two separate promotions and has not lost since 2004). Kampmann spoke with recently about the disappointing split decision loss.

“I really gave the victory away by trying to finish him with submissions and losing position because of it,” Kampmann assessed. “It was a stupid mistake on my part and I am very disappointed in myself for such a poor performance. … There are definitely flaws in the judging criteria but I’m not sure how to fix it. Best way is to not leave it to the judges.”

The only thing for the very capable Kampmann to do from here is get back on the horse and look for another victory. He told Riddum that he is injury-free coming out of the Shields fight and would like to get back in the cage as soon as possible.

“I don’t know yet. Maybe [Dan] Hardy or [Matt] Serra,” Kampmann said of possible opponents. “They are both coming out of losses as well, but really it could be anybody. I don’t want to wait too long. I had no injuries after the fight, because [Jake Shields] didn’t really do much but hug me. My only sore spot is my knee from hitting him in the head.”
