UFC matchmaker-extraordinaire Joe Silva spoke with Fighters Only recently, where he confirmed that the title shot promised to Nate Marquardt should he defeat Okami this weekend also applies to “Thunder” should he take out Marquardt.
“He’s definitely getting a title shot if he beats Nate, definitely,” Silva said.
Holding a UFC record of 9-2 with wins over the likes of Mike Swick, Alan Belcher, Evan Tanner, Dean Lister and Mark Munoz, Okami is one of the best middleweights competing not having been awarded a title shot. Silva told Fighters Only that Okami would have already been granted a shot at the 185-pound crown were it not for frequent and poorly timed injuries suffered by Okami.
“Well, he would have had title shots before, Yushin’s problem is that he keeps getting injured,” Silva said. “But he’s getting a shot this time if he beats Nate Marquardt, for sure.”
Good news for Okami, who will be looking to extend his current winning streak to three in a row this weekend at the Konig Pilsener Arena in Oberhausen, Germany, when he takes on Nate Marquardt in the main event of UFC 122. The winner between Okami and Marquardt will face the winner of the upcoming title fight between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort, which will likely be taking place this February 5th at UFC 126.
