MMA legend Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva is taking his injury-induced time off from competition to kick up some dust in the UFC middleweight division. From calling out Chael Sonnen during a van ride to predicting that former opponent Vitor Belfort will “get destroyed” when he takes on Anderson Silva this February, “The Axe Murderer” is leaving few stones unturned at 185-pounds.
Having gotten wind of Silva’s prediction, Belfort brushed off the man he defeated in under a minute back in 1998 as a meaningless spectator. Never one to back down, Silva recently took to his Twitter account in order to call out “The Phenom” once again. Props to MMAMania.com for the find.
“You know, I was missing something. But then I found out I needed a rival,” wrote Wanderlei. “I never trained as hard as the time I fought (Ricardo) Arona. But now, I want (Vitor) Belfort, and I’m already trained for you. I’m gonna get you, you’ll see!”
Belfort has a Super Bowl date with current champ Anderson Silva before he can oblige Wanderlei, and if he wins the title he will have to face either Yushin Okami or Nate Marquardt before “The Axe Murderer” gets his turn. A rematch between Silva and Belfort certainly holds intrigue, but if it fails to eventually materialize both Alan Belcher and Chris Leben have expressed interest in fighting Silva when he makes his comeback–and let’s not forget Chael Sonnen, who is currently waiting to file an appeal with the California State Athletic Commission concerning his positive pre-fight performance enhancing drug test from UFC 117.
