Nate Marquardt Thinks Jake Shields Should Move Back To Middleweight

Speaking with fans on an open chat hosted by, Nate “The Great” Marquardt lent his two cents on former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields’ prospects in the UFC welterweight division, where he is currently in line to fight for the belt.

Marquardt explained that Shields has proven successful at middleweight and that fighters with styles similar to his own have done well in the UFC’s 185-pound division.

“At middleweight we’ve seen guys like Demian Maia and Rousimar Palhares do well, and I think Jake could be like them,” Marquardt said. “And then at middleweight he could also do well because the weight cut wouldn’t affect his performance.”

However, considering Shields unpleasant debut performance against Martin Kampmann last month, Marquardt doesn’t see Shields’ future at welterweight a being very bright.

“It’s hard to say,” Marquardt said. “I think he definitely would be good at middleweight but I thought he looked bad at 170. Part of it was the weight cut, but part of it is his style as well, and I think a lot of people underestimate Kampmann — he’s a tough, well-rounded fighter. I don’t think he’s the best but he’s good at everything. Shields is kind of the opposite — not good at some things but really good or the best at other things. I think putting Shields against a well-rounded opponent was bad for him against Kampmann and worse against Georges.”

“The Great” was straightforward in giving his prediction for the eventual (assuming St. Pierre defeats Josh Koscheck this December, which is far from a given) bout between Shields and St. Pierre.

“I think Georges is going to destroy him,” he predicted.
