UFC Hall of Famer Randy “The Natural” Couture has caused quite a stir in the MMA community with his public revelation that he is contemplating walking away from MMA for good. While he has remained steadfast against making a definitive public statement regarding his retirement, “The Natural” has made it fairly clear that it will have to be a very interesting bout put on the table for him to strap on his gloves.
“I’m not gonna make any official announcements,” Couture told MMAFix. “My last two fights were more of the novelty nature. I’ve been through the wars, I’ve had the battles. I don’t know if I see myself stepping up for anymore of those kinds of battles and there’s a lot of tough guys in the division at 205 right now. I think style-wise I match up better against [UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio] ‘Shogun’ [Rua] or [Lyoto] Machida but I don’t know if the UFC wants to throw me into a title fight right away. They’re gonna want me to fight some of those other cats in the weight class.”
Couture pointed to the simple fact that he is 47-years old as his reason for contemplating the future; stating that he has already pushed the age boundaries in the sport and, despite his current good health, he may retire with chips still on the table.
“I’m a competitive person. I’m also pretty realistic,” said Couture. “I’ve pushed this further than anybody’s probably gonna push it and I’ve had an amazing year. I do have fights left in me. I’m healthy as ever. I’m a better fighter than I’ve ever been right now but let’s face it, I’m old. I’m still not the athlete that I was ten years ago but I’m having fun and that’s what it boils down to.”
