Scott Coker Sees Gina Carano Returning In 2011

During a recent appearance on the Sherdog Radio Network’s Savage Dog Show, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker revealed that he believes women’s MMA star Gina “Conviction” Carano will return to MMA competition next year after taking a break from the sport for over a year.

“I believe so,” Coker said of Carano’s eventual return.

Carano, known as much for her striking looks as her fighting talents, has been capitalizing on her fame by taking roles in several fairly high-profile Hollywood projects. Coker believes that, like his former middleweight champion Cung Le, film projects will only act as a temporary departure for Carano and that she will be lured back to the sport by her competitive drive.

“I know Gina is not going to go out the way that it went down,” Coker said. “Her whole thing now is just timing and scheduling. She’s got the movie coming out in April, I believe, and she’s got some more stuff on her plate.”

The former Strikeforce women’s 145-pound champion lost her belt in her last appearance in the cage to current women’s wrecking machine Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos. Santos dispatched of Carano in one round via TKO, upsetting Carano’s undefeated 7-0 record. Coker sees Carano being reluctant to leave MMA on a low note and lacing her gloves back up in the next year.

“I know, just like Cung [Le] or other people that have [been] part of the film business … they’re still a fighter by heart, believe me, and they have that desire to compete,” Coker said. “I think Gina will be the same. It’s just a matter of time. I believe she will fight in 2011.”
