The news that the UFC would be absorbing the WEC was long overdue, but came as a surprise to many. Among those caught unaware was WEC Lightweight Champion Benson “Smooth” Henderson, who took to his Facebook account in order to inform everyone that he is staying focused on his upcoming title defense in the face of the big news and to issue a warning to all of the UFC lightweights. Props to MMAMania.com for the find.
“Just heard about the merger, I was out running and when I got home had a hundred missed calls and a thousand texts…I’m excited that’s really cool but I have a dance on Dec.16th to get ready for first, that’s the only thing I care about right now…,” Henderson wrote. “BUT all of you other ’55ers out there consider this your official notice, I’M COMING, it was always a matter of when but now we know and it’s a lock, train hard…”
Henderson will defend his WEC lightweight title against challenger Anthony Pettis at WEC 53 this December 16th in what will likely be the last WEC-tagged event ever.
It was announced today along with the news of the merger that the winner of the WEC 53 title fight between Henderson and Pettis will get a shot at the winner of the upcoming UFC lightweight title fight, between champ Frankie Edgar and challenger Gray Maynard, to unify the two promotion’s titles.
