Not only did American Kickboxing Academy-product Cain Velasquez defeat Brock Lesnar in one round to become the new heavyweight champion, but the proud Mexican-American also took home the a Knockout of the Night bonus worth $70,000.
In the main event of UFC 121, Velasquez weathered an intimidating early onslaught from Lesnar and turned the momentum in his favor by getting the bigger fighter to the ground. After landing some big shots on the feet, Velasquez followed Lesnar to the mat and pounded away with punches from the top until Herb Dean was forced to step in.
Welterweight fighters Diego Sanchez and Paulo Thiago took home the Fight of the Night bonus, also worth $70,000, for their effort put forth over their three round war. Sanchez rebounded from a tough first round to dominate Thiago for the remainder of the fight to take home a unanimous decision win.
Daniel “Ninja” Roberts earned the Submission of the Night bonus for his first round anaconda choke win over Mike “Guymon.
