UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will make his third title defense tonight against arguably his toughest opponent to date: hungry up-and-comer Cain Velasquez. Lesnar and Velasquez recently issued statements regarding each other in an ESPN promo, and the former professional wrestler remained as confident as ever in attempting to put his opponent in his place.
“You guys train hard and you might think you’re doing all the right things but the show will not stop yet for Brock Lesnar,” Lesnar said.
Velasquez is known for his technique and never-ending cardiovascular conditioning and the American Kickboxing Academy product is similarly confident in his skills; stating that he believes in his ability to knock out the goliath-sized champion. In response, Lesnar pointed to his recent belt defense against Shane Carwin as evidence of how hard it is to put him away.
“I don’t think Cain Velasquez hits as hard as Shane Carwin; I’ll beg to differ on that,” he said.
Lesnar recently returned from a year-long forced hiatus due to a severe bout with diverticulitis. The brash champion has revamped much in his lifestyle and training since then and believes that the UFC belt is his to hold for the foreseeable future.
“We’ll find out who the true champion is and it’s not gonna be Cain Velasquez,” Lesnar said.
When the two heavyweight fighters meet tonight, Lesnar promises to show Velasquez that he is out of his league.
“Mr. Velasquez, you are not better than Brock Lesnar and you will find out come fight night.”
UFC 121: Lesnar vs. Velásquez takes place tonight from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. As always, FightLine.com will provide live coverage of the event.
