“UFC 120: Bisping Vs. Akiyama” Results

Fabio Maldonado defeated James McSweeney via TKO (punches) at 0:48 of Round 3.

Spencer Fisher defeated Kurt Warburton via unanimous decision.

Paul Sass defeated Mark Holst via submission (triangle choke) at 4:45 of Round 1.

Rob Broughton defeated Vinicius Quieroz via submission (rear-naked choke) at 1:43 of Round 3.

Claude Patrick defeated James Wilks via unanimous decision (30-27 across the board).


The preliminary card bout between Alexander Gustafsson and Cyril Diabate has been chosen as the lead in Spike’s tape delay broadcast of UFC 120. They skip footage of the walkout and jump right into fighter introductions. Leon Roberts is the third man for this bout.

Round 1: They touch gloves and Gus tries a leg kick. Gustafsson looking sharp in the striking department against world class standup fighter Diabate. Gus drops “The Snake” with a left, follows him to the ground and looks to work side control. Gus is all over him but Diabate eventually gets back to his feet. He eats a knee to the body for it. They clinch against the fence and as they break, Gustafsson lands some big shots the put “The Snake” on his back again. Diabate gets back to his feet but Gus is hammering him, unwilling to let his opponent recover. Diabate with a body kick and a solid combo of his own. Gus goes for a takedown and eventually gets it, establishing side control again. Gus postures up and looks for some ground and pound, Diabate just trying to hold on. scores the round 10-9 for Gustafsson

Round 2: Gus strikes first with a left, Diabate eventually answers with a solid right. Gus picks Diabate up and promptly plants him on the canvas. Gus tying Diabate up on the ground, he establishes full mount. Gustafsson goes for a rear naked, lets go and starts hammering away with punches. He goes for the choke again, lets it go and lands more punches. He goes for it again and sinks it. Diabate taps.

Cheick Kongo vs. Travis Browne

Marc Goddard is the ref for this one.

Round 1: No glove touch between these two. Browne looking for a big shot early, swinging away with bad intentions. Kongo staying patient and looking to pick his shots. Browne rushing forward looking to land, Kong still backing away and taking his time. Browne keeping his hands low and utilizing a jittery, loose style. Inside leg kick by Browne. Kongo pushing forward trying to land and Browne staggers him. They exchange against the cage and Browne buckles Kongo again. Browne establishes the Thai clinch and lands a few solid knees. Browne with a one-two. Browne keeping Kongo honest here. Browne lunges forward with an overhand right. Kongo clinches Browne against the cage. Browne circles away. Browne with a Superman punch and a leg kick. Kongo lands to end the round. scores the round 10-9 for Browne

Round 2: Kongo misses on a leg kick. He lands a one-two that lands solid. Another straight right hand lands solid. Kongo lands a low knee that halts the action. Browne still looking to lunge in with looping shots but Kongo manages to counter with straight punches. Kongo presses Browne against the cage and Browne just shoves him to the ground. Kongo complains of an eye poke that stalls Browne’s follow-up offense. Kongo with a nice combo. He gets Browne against the cage and looks for knees to the leg/body. Browne doing his best to get Kongo off of him but it’s the referee that has to do the job. Now it’s Browne who clinches Kongo against the cage when they restart. Kongo reverses him and continues to land knees to the inside of Browne’s right leg. Browne reverses Kongo now but the ref separates them again. And it’s right back to the cage. Browne gets a takedown at the bell. scores the round 10-10 for Kongo

Round 3: Browne immediately goes for a takedown off of a Kongo leg kick and they just end up against the fence again. Kongo warned for holding Browne’s shorts. Kongo is deducted one point for continually holding onto Browne’s shorts. Now it’s Kongo looking for a takedown. Kongo warned again for holding the shorts. They separate and Kongo lands a leg kick. Kongo moves forward with a jab and a body kick. Goddard has to pull Kongo’s hand off of Browne’s shorts as they clinch against the fence. Goddard separates them again. Browne doing little more than backing up or standing still. Kongo moving forward but not throwing anything, Now he starts to launch some punch offense but as soon as Browne fires back Kongo backs off. Browne lands a weak left hook. They hit the fence again with Kongo looking for a takedown. Goddard forced to move Kongo’s hand again. Browne ends the round with a successful takedown. scores the round 10-10 (10-9 for Browne with Kongo’s point deduction)

Cheick Kongo and Travis Browne fought to a draw (28-28 across the board)

Mike Pyle vs. John Hathaway

Leon Roberts will officiate this bout as well.

Round 1: They touch gloves and begin the feeling out process. Pyle with a leg kick. Pyle lands a takedown shortly into the fight; Hathaway backs his way to the cage and eventually turns Pyle so that his back is on the cage. They get back to their feet. Hathaway looking to sneak an uppercut into his combos. Pyle almost sits Hathaway down with a punch but the Brit quickly recovers. Pyle with a nice right as Hathaway tries a takedown. “The Hitman” tries a knee that whiffs. Pyle controlling the standup in round one. Pyle goes for a takedown that is stuffed but he turns it into a successful knee strike. Pyle gets Hathaway down. scores the round 10-9 for Pyle

Round 2: Hathaway looking to land more frequently in this round but Pyle is timing him well and avoiding his punches. Pyle looks for the takedown but Hathaway avoids it. Pyle lands a nice right hand. Hathaway lands a nice one-two against the cage that pops Pyle’s head up. Pyle tries for another takedown that is stuffed. Hathaway with a knee, he misses on his follow up punches. Pyle deftly avoids a combo, fights hard and lands a spectacular takedown. He establishes side control with Hathaway’s feet against the fence. Pyle looking for a mounted triangle, he is slamming right hands into an immobilized Hathaway’s face. Hathaway trying to fight out but Pyle isn’t having it. Pyle landing elbow after elbow and the round ends with Hathaway in the same position. scores the round 10-9 for Pyle

Round 3: They touch gloves and go back at it. Hathaway with a body kick. Pyle looks for the takedown and Hathaway avoids. Hathaway with a nice right hand. They hit the cage and reverse each other several times before Pyle looks for the single leg. Pyle briefly gets Hathaway down but “The Hitman” gets back up. Pyle is all over him though, and gets him right back down. Pyle showing beautiful grappling and gets Hathaway off the fence, landing in his guard. Hathaway doing his best to get free but Pyle just isn’t having it. Hathaway really trying to get up off of his back and he manages to scoot to the cage, almost starting to wall-walk, before Pyle drags him back down. Pyle is dominating Hathaway with superior grappling and landing several short elbows from on top. scores the round 10-9 for Pyle

Mike Pyle defeated John Hathaway via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Dan Hardy vs. Carlos Condit

Carlos Condit not looking to make any friends here, he walks out to the beginning of Jimi Hendrix’s version of the Star Spangled Banner looking focused and determined. Hardy walks out to the cheers and to the song, “Englang Belongs To Me” by Cock Sparrer.

Round 1: Condit lands first with an inside leg kick. The crowd chants, “Hardy!” Hardy with a solid leg kick. Condit returns with an inside leg kick. Hardy with a left hook. Condit showing nice timing, Hardy fighting with more aggression. Condit with a nice counter one-two. Condit with a leg kick. Another. Condit with a one-two head kick that is partially blocked. Condit checking Hardy’s lead leg with his back foot. Hardy with a solid left hook. Hardy tries a head kick and Condit lands a body kick. Condit with a straight right-left hook combo. Condit catches a foot jab from Hardy and kicks him to the back side. Hardy landing with heavy left hooks. He lands another. Condit moves in with a nice combo punctuated by a missed head kick. Hardy lands a nice right and looks to follow up with a left hook, at the same time Condit loads up on a picture perfect left hook of his own. As the two punches connect, Hardy drops to the floor asleep. Still standing, Condit lands a few punches to a grounded Hardy before the ref steps in. Spectacular finish.

Carlos Condit defeated Dan Hardy via knockout (4:27) of Round 1.

Condit is respectful in victory as Hardy is humble in defeat. “The Outlaw” offers, “I got punched in the face” as an explanation of what went wrong.

Michael Bisping vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama

Akiyama walks out as always, to Ave Maria with a bow on his way into the crowd. Bisping enters to “Song Number 2″ by Blur and the crowd’s support. Marc Goddard in charge of this bout.

Round 1: They touch gloves. Akiyama throws a big overhand right. He moves in with some big punches, Joe Rogan thinks Bisping is hurt. Bisping with a nice right. Akiyama lands a left hook as they engage. Bisping with a nice leg kick. Bisping shoots for a takedown and gets some nice punches in on the break. Bisping gets the takedown but Akiyama gets right back to his feet. They trade, Akiyama complains of a low blow but Goddard tells them to keep going. Bisping starting to settle in. Bisping with a nice right. A leg kick to follow. Akiyama tries for a spinning back fist that Bisping gives him props for. Bisping landing more frequently and with more power than Akiyama. He tries for a takedown, gets stuffed but lands punches off of it. Big flying knee to end the round for Bisping. scores the round 10-9 for Bisping

Round 2: They touch gloves again. Akiyama with a left hook-right hand combo that lands. Bisping with a combo. Akiyama catches a body kick but he doesn’t land much off of it. Both men really throwing down but Bisping staying a bit more technical. Bisping basically calls time for a poke to the eye, the ref gets them fighting but gives them a second. They get right back to it, and it’s Bisping landing with more frequency. Bisping with a solid right and left hand. Akiyama with a right hand. Akiyama tries a judo sweep that Bisping avoids. Bisping is timing Akiyama well and using his movement to avoid most damage. Bisping tries with his own spinning back fist that clips Akiyama’s head. They smile and touch gloves. Bisping is landing cleanly on Akiyama, who is having a hard time landing at all. Akiyama with a nice body kick. Akiyama with a solid right hand. Another solid straight right for Bisping. Bisping never ceasing for long with his attack. Akiyama stuns Bisping with a big right hand. He’s pouring it on here at the end and Bisping is just trying to hold on. He makes it to the bell. scores the round 10-9 for Bisping

Round 3: They touch gloves again to start the round. Akiyama whiffs a big right hand. Akiyama pushing forward with a combo but Bisping fires back with a head kick that slows Akiyama. Akiyama still in it though and looking to exchange. Bisping lands a right hand square. He lands another that stuns Akiyama. Bisping catches Akiyama low with a kick, he drops to the ground. They touch gloves and get back to it. Bisping with a body kick and a right hand. Akiyama looking to load up with big shots but Bisping is moving and countering well. Bisping tags Akiyama off of a missed spinning back fist. Bisping is teeing off on Akiyama here. Bisping has been working at the same pace throughout this fight and the accumulation seems to be taking its toll on Akiyama. “The Count” is landing at will it seems, even though Akiyama is constantly looking to land a knockout shot. Akiyama pours it on in the last few seconds but Bisping keeps it together. scores the round 10-9 for Bisping

Michael Bisping defeated Yoshihiro Akiyama via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Bisping and Akiyama show each other tons of respect after the fight. Bisping admits to getting rocked early by Akiyama.
