UFC middleweight fighter Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort once again confirmed his middleweight title fight against champion Anderson Silva, saying that they will be meeting this February 5th at the yet-to-be announced UFC 127.
“The fight is definitely going to happen,” Belfort said on yesterday’s edition of Inside MMA. “It’s February 5. It’s going to be the fight in Vegas for the Super Bowl.”
Belfort was promoted to the number one middleweight contender after it was revealed that former number one Chael Sonnen popped positive for performance enhancing drugs on his UFC 117 drug test (the same event where he earned himself an immediate rematch with Silva). There is some controversy over Belfort’s claim to a middleweight title shot as he has not yet actually competed in the UFC’s middleweight division, however Belfort stated that he plans to make the most of his opportunity.
“It’s like I’m set,” Belfort said. “I’m set for one goal. I’m going to go there and get what belongs to me. The only thing I can do is go there and perform my best.
“I’m not worried if it’s Anderson Silva, or if it’s any other person in front of me. Whatever is in front of me is what’s the most important thing for me right now. Anderson Silva is a great fighter, a great athlete. I’ve known him for a long time, and I know I have all the ability, but now, what I’m doing is doing my part. I’m training and putting my skills together.”
UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva recently set the record for most consecutive title defenses in the UFC by defending his middleweight belt seven times in a row. Silva had the fight of his life when loud-mouthed challenger Chael Sonnen took it to him for most of five rounds, bullying “The Spider” all over the cage until the champ pulled a triangle choke out of his bag of tricks and submitted his challenger. Silva is currently out of action nursing a rib injury he sustained prior to the Sonnen fight but has been expected to make his return in the early part of 2011.
UFC 127 has yet to be officially announced by the UFC but is expected to take place this February 5th somewhere in Las Vegas, Nevada in conjunction with Super Bowl weekend.
