Manager to some of the best fighters in the game, Ed Soares recently revealed a fight that he would like to put together for one of his more prominent clients and the potential match up will have MMA fans salivating. Soares appeared on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour on MMAFighting.com with host Ariel Helwani and revealed that he would like to see his client dynamic WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo take on another smaller-weight champion in what would be an amazing match up.
“To be honest with you, if you were to say, ‘What would be your dream fight for [Aldo]?’ I think a dream fight for him, which I think would just be a fight that everyone would love to see, would be Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo,” Soares said. “That fight to me is the fight that everybody would want to see simply just because, not to disrespect anybody at the 155-pound division to think that Jose has the right to go up there without fighting in it, I just think that, as their styles, the way they match up, it would be one of the greatest fights of all-time, I think. It has the potential to be, just because of their styles.”
Aldo recently lengthened his reign as the WEC 145lb. king by demolishing contender Manny Gamburyan inside of two rounds. Aldo and Gamburyan met in the cage last week at WEC 51 and the champion put the challenger down with a beautifully timed uppercut and some follow-up ground and pound to retain his belt and make it two-straight successful title defenses. For his part, Edgar has to get past the only person to have defeated him so far in his MMA career: Gray Maynard. The two UFC lightweights will likely meet this January 1st at UFC 125 to dispute Edgar’s lightweight crown.
UFC President Dana White recently hinted that big things were on the horizon concerning the WEC so it may not be completely out of the realm of possibility for Aldo and Edgar to meet sometime in the future. At this point, though, any talk of that bout is pure (albeit fun and interesting) speculation.
