MMAJunkie.com is reporting that $10,000 bonuses have been awarded to four of the fighters who competed on the WEC 51: Aldo vs. Gamburyan fight card tonight in Broomfield, Colorado.
Former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres earned Submission of the Night honors after his dominant performance over Charlie Valencia ended in a rear naked choke submission. Torres bounced back from a two-fight losing streak with the win and looked very impressive in victory.
Featherweight fighter George Roop earned Knockout of the Night honors for his head kick-KO of fan-favorite brawler Chan Sung Jung, better known as “The Korean Zombie.” Roop was all over Jung from the first bell, taking advantage of his reach and Jung’s immobility to stick the Korean fighter repeatedly with hard shots and finally end things in the second round with a well-placed kick to the face.
Lightweight rivals Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner took home Fight of the Night honors for their three round barnburner of a rematch. Cerrone and Varner went at each other from bell to bell but it was Cerrone who held the edge throughout the contest. The fight certainly delivered on the grudge match hype as Cerrone and Varner both did their best to decapitate the other at every moment in the fight.
WEC 51 took place tonight at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado. In the main event, WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo knocked out Manny Gamburyan to retain his featherweight title.
