MMAJunkie and MMAFighting.com have together confirmed that UFC lightweight champion Frankie “The Answer” Edgar will be making his second title defense this New Year’s Day against the last and only man to defeat him, Gray “The Bully” Maynard.
Tom’s River, New Jersey native Frankie Edgar shocked the world when he defeated former lightweight kingpin BJ “The Prodigy” Penn back in April at UFC 112 to capture the lightweight belt. He was an underdog heading into that fight and many wrote off his victory as the result of a poor judges’ decision and a bad night for “The Prodigy.” Edgar left no doubt in anyone’s mind when he took on Penn in a rematch of that bout late this last August at UFC 118 and dominated “The Prodigy” over five rounds en route to a unanimous decision win. Edgar will now look to erase the only loss on his record against Maynard.
Xtreme Couture-trained Gray “The Bully” Maynard has remained undefeated in ten professional fights, with all but two coming under the UFC banner (footnote: Maynard has a No Contest on his record stemming from a UFC bout with Robert Emerson in which he slammed Emerson to the mat, forcing Emerson to tap out from a rib injury while simultaneously knocking himself unconscious). Maynard holds notable wins over Dennis Siver (unanimous decision), Jim Miller (unanimous decision), Roger Huerta (split decision), Nate Diaz (split decision), Edgar (unanimous decision), and most recently, Kenny Florian (unanimous decision).
UFC 125 is expected to take place this January 1st at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
