The most heated grudge match this side of Rashad-“Rampage” is set to see its second stanza as Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Jamie Varner are going to have a rematch of their heated January 2009 battle tomorrow night at WEC 51. The pre-fight banter (specifically from Cerrone’s side) has possibly exceeded the vitriol traded between bitter rivals Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and, despite Varner’s expressed hopes of a possible reconciliation post-fight, Cerrone told MMAFighting.com recently that he has no plans of ending his feud with Varner once the last bell rings Thursday night.
“Hell no,” Cerrone told MMAFighting of reconciling with Varner. “I hope I knock his (butt) out. I’ll say, ‘Hey, (b—-) boy, you wanna have a rematch in your home state in December? Let’s do it. Run it back. Let’s go.”
“Cowboy,” who found himself in some heat recently for pulling a Frank Mir and wishing death upon Varner, has gone into serious detail about why he and Varner will never be friends. However, he has consistently given Varner props for his talents as a fighter.
“You can’t change who you are as a person,” Cerrone said. “As a fighter, I’ve got nothing bad to say about him. He isn’t where he is as a fighter, he’s not a (former) champion, because he sucks. As a fighter, he does what he has to do and I credit him a lot. I think he’s a very good fighter. But as a person, I just don’t like him. I couldn’t just hate you and you not hate me back. I don’t think it works like that.”
Cerrone said that he realizes fighting consumed with anger is usually the path to downfall for a fighter but, at this point, bringing his pitched emotions into the cage is unavoidable.
“Hindsight’s 20/20, so I should probably not let my emotions take over,” Cerrone said. “But I’m going to. And I’m going to try to do a lot of damage to him. That’s my game plan. I’m taking a lot of heat for things I’ve been saying, but I’m in that mindset. I don’t like him. I’m planning on doing everything I say I’m gonna do.”
Look for fireworks when Cerrone and Varner meet this Thursday night at WEC 51, which is going down at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado and will air live on The Versus Network.
