UFC president Dana White showed his displeasure in this weekend’s UFC 119 main event by opting not to hand out a Knockout of the Night bonus despite the fact that Frank Mir (who knocked out Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic) was the only fighter on the card to actually score a knockout. White spoke with ESPN.com recently and again voiced his vexation with the main event; in which Mir and Filipovic alternately circled, clinched, and talked instead of fighting.
“I have no clue about Frank,” said White. “To talk the stuff he does, and then fight like he fought, that’s a little frustrating. Once Cro Cop stuffed his takedown attempt, his heart fell out on the floor. If Frank Mir can’t bully you, his heart shrinks to the size of the Grinch’s. If he can’t take you down, his heart shrinks to the size of a pea.”
White’s interviewer then reportedly asked the head honcho whether or not he could fire the former UFC heavyweight champion based on his lackluster performance, which was basically a repeat of Gabriel Gonzaga-Kevin Jordan from UFC 56, to which White replied: “Sure,” said White. “You really, really need to show up and deliver. This is a job.”
To avoid leaving things open-ended, White took to his Twitter account today in order to clarify his statement.
“To end this sh** I did not say I was cutting Mir,” he wrote. “Reporter said ‘could u’ I said of course I could. It was VERY clear I was not.”
So, Mir is still currently employed; but engaging in many more fights reminiscent of the one he had against against Filipovic Saturday night and he may be looking for a paycheck elsewhere.
