UFC 119: Matt Serra Vs. Chris Lytle

The crowd loudly voices its support for Chris Lytle as he makes his way to the cage. Serra is booed equally loudly as he walks out to “Gonna Fly Now (The Rocky Theme).” The two men shake hands and hug as Serra takes a lap around the cage. Herb Dean will ref this bout.

Round 1: They touch gloves and start swinging immediately. Serra landing heavy to the body. The two men are throwing down but things are staying fairly even so far; Serra is digging into the body and Lytle is landing some solid rights from range. Lytle landing with bit more frequency but then Serra lands two big right hands. This fight has been all hands so far and both men are giving as good as they’re getting. Due to Lytle’s power and precision in his right hand, Serra’s left eye is cut and beginning to swell. Lytle with another right. Serra is pushing forward but Lytle is beating him to the punch. Lytle turning it on here. Close round. scores the round 10-9 for Lytle

Round 2: They go right back at it in the second, trading hands in the pocket. Lytle rocks Serra but Serra pops right back up and makes Lytle pay for it. These two are just slugging away. Still no kicks or takedown attempts, a strategic decision that seems to be favoring Lytle at this point. Lylte with a right and an uppercut that staggers Serra but Serra goes right back into it. Lytle has the timing on Serra here and is landing clean and often. Now it’s Serra pressing forward, but his bullrush is stalled by a spot-on uppercut delivered by Lytle. Serra is not backing down but Lytle is wining these exchanges. Lytle pours it on and the crowd goes nuts but a wobbly Serra will not be put away. scores the round 10-9 for Lytle

Round 3: The two men embrace and go right back at it. Lytle slips and catches Serra as he rushes in. Serra looks for a takedown but Lytle avoids it easily. Serra with a leg kick. Again. Serra with another kick to the leg. Serra is looking slower and is having a hard time lading more than body punches and leg kicks. Lytle counters a leg kick with another nice right hand. Serra lands a clean right. Another leg kick from Serra. Lytle with a solid left hook. Another leg kick from Serra. Serra tries for a spinning back fist but whiffs on it. Lytle landing clean with several punches. Serra tries for a head kick that misses. Serra trying to push forward but is stopped by the bell. scores the round 10-9 for Lytle

Chris Lytle defeated Matt Serra via unanimous decision (30-27 across the board)

The two men embrace again. Lytle is met with a rousing ovation. Lytle pleads for the crowd to cheer for Matt Serra and is all class as usual. Serra says that he wanted to give Lytle the fight that he deserved and wasn’t looking to win on takedowns and control.
