According to the MMAWeekly, Vitor Belfort will be forced out of another main event. This time, Nate Marquardt will sub in to face Yushin Okami at UFC 122 in Germany.
Marquardt bounced back from a disappointing showing against alleged PED abuser Chael Sonnen at UFC 109 in February by quickly disposing of Rousimar Palhares last week at “UFC Fight Night 22.”
Okami, on the other hand, is fresh off a split decision win over Mark Munoz at “UFC on Versus 2.” The talented Japanese star has won five of his last six scraps. His only loss during the stretch came to the aforementioned Sonnen.
Meanwhile, Belfort is rumored to be facing Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title. Octagon brass had confirmed earlier this week the Belfort/Okami victor would be granted a title shot in 2011. Given Marquardt’s resume and prior top contender status, it’s likely that won’t change.
