It appears as though the agreed upon immediate title fight rematch between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen has been put on hold indefinitely, as Sonnen has been implicated by the California State Athletic Commission as having failed his UFC 117 (where he put forth an impressive, but ultimately losing effort against the champion) drug test for performance enhancing substances. Never fear, the UFC middleweight division is currently not short on title contenders and a match up between two such individuals is looming on the horizon; and it may have just been upgraded to a number one contender’s bout, where the winner will receive the next shot at the currently-injured champion’s middleweight title.
The UFC issued a press release today in regards to the upcoming UFC 122 event to be held in Oberhausen, Germany this November 13th. The card was officially announced and it was also revealed that the event’s main attraction fighters, Vitor Belfort and Yushin Okami, will likely be fighting for a chance to challenge “The Spider” for his belt.
“Both Vitor Belfort and Yushin Okami are one win away from a shot at the UFC middleweight title and are coming to Germany with a great deal to win and lose,” said UK UFC head Marshall Zelaznik.
The very likely scenario here, as was pointed out by MMAFightin.com, is that the UFC is preparing to have either Okami or Belfort (depending on who wins) take on Silva should Sonnen find himself unable to successfully appeal the expected CSAC-mandated suspension for steroid use.
