CagePotato.com is reporting that a rubber match between former UFC Welterweight Champions Matt Hughes and BJ “The Prodigy” Penn is currently being worked out for a targeted date of November 20th. The rumors are reinforced by recent statements released by both fighters indicating that they are looking at a big fight this November.
Last week, Penn issued this statement via his personal website, BJPenn.com:
“Dana White’s been texting me the last couple days and it looks like I’m probably gonna be back in the ring in November sometime. So, Dana’s trying to put the fight together. That’s what I know as of right now, I’ll keep you guys posted. This is gonna be good.”
Matt Hughes released a statement today that echoed Penn’s, also posted to his personal website at Matt-Hughes.com. Hughes’ statement reads: “…Dana called me yesterday and we had an interesting conversation about the November 20th UFC in Detroit. More news about that down the road.”
Penn and Hughes have met twice in the UFC, the first time resulting in a stunning upset loss for Hughes where Penn captured his long-held welterweight belt via first round submission. Hughes would take the second fight though, struggling early on with Penn but ultimately catching the Hawaiian in a crucifix and pounding away until the referee stopped the contest. A fight between the two will allow one man to claim the title of the better fighter; for Hughes it will springboard him one step closer to an increasingly less improbable title run and for Penn it will allow him the opportunity to rebound from two straight losses to UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar.
The two are believed to be meeting at UFC 123 which will likely go down this November 20th at The palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
