UFC-exiled Paul “Semtex” Daley has been (and will be tonight) appearing on fight cards put on by relatively unknown promotions since getting the boot from the world’s biggest MMA promotion this past May. It is being widely rumored that Daley could be joining the Strikeforce promotion, home to a solid welterweight division, and “Semtex” lent a bit of credence to those rumors on a recent appearance on MMAWeekly Radio when he spoke with enthusiasm about a possible match up with Strikeforce Wetlerweight Champion Nick Diaz.
“Nick Diaz – great fighter. It took me a while to come round to it,” said Daley. “As a person people say he’s a bit of a (expletive), that sort of stuff, but as a fighter I’m a huge Nick Diaz fan. A lot of people say stuff about his boxing and everything, I think he’s a fantastic boxer. He’s one of my favorite fighters at the moment.”
Diaz is currently scheduled to take on KJ Noons in a rematch of their 2007 bout which Noons won via TKO (doctor stoppage) due to cuts on Diaz’s face. Daley doesn’t believe Noons deserved to win that fight and is looking for Diaz to claim victory when they meet again.
“K.J. Noons, I wouldn’t say he’s one of my favorite fighters,” Daley said. “I don’t think too much of him, and I think Nick Diaz should put him away pretty easily.”
“Semtex’s” options outside of the UFC are limited and he realizes that; he sees Diaz as the most legitimate welterweight fighter outside of the UFC’s promotional walls and for that reason he wants to test himself against the Stockton kid.
“We’ll see where I’m at because I’d love to fight Nick Diaz,” Daley said. “Outside of the UFC, he’s probably the biggest name out there, most highly rated. I think he’s a badass, and I want to test myself.”
The Team Rough House member said that he desires to face Diaz because it is a bout that would motivate him sufficiently to put all of himself into his training.
“I’m looking for fights that are going to motivate me,” he said. “I’m not short of motivation because I love fighting, but I’m looking for something that will give me that extra intensity, and make me want to lock myself away and make me want to give 110 percent in everything that I’m doing. I think Nick Diaz would be a great fight for me. If that could happen at some point in the future, I’d really look forward to it.”
A fight between the two notorious bad boys would certainly sell tickets and draw in viewers, not to mention provide a quality match up between two of the most exciting welterweight fighters in the world to MMA fans. It remains to be seen whether or not Daley will sign with Strikeforce and whether or not he will have to work his way up the rankings or be granted an immediate title shot. Either way, a fighter of Daley’s talents would do well with the solid competition provided by Strikeforce’s 170 pound division.
