UK welterweight Paul Daley will look to build on his post-UFC career record tonight when he takes on Jorge Masvidal at Shark Fights 13. Daley was rumored to be having issues obtaining his visa and actually arrived later than he had planned to for that reason. “Semtex” failed to make weight for his bout with Masvidal and told Sherdog.com that he credits the late arrival, as well as some issues with a scale, for being overweight.
“I think mostly because we came in a bit later than we normally come in, we arrived here Wednesday,” Daley offered as a reason for weighing in at 171.75 pounds. “It only really gave us one real good day of weight cutting. I don’t want to create too many excuses but we didn’t get the official scales to check our weight on until the day of the weigh in as well which sucks a little bit. My scale is two pounds off of the official scale. There were some problems but, again, I don’t want to make too many excuses. Masvidal’s agreed to fight, we’ve come to a purse agreement. He’ll get a bit of my purse or whatever. As long as the fight’s on–I know I can’t keep doing this….It is what it is.”
As is standard procedure, Daley was offered an extra hour to cut the rest of the weight but was unable to slough off the last 3/4 of a pound in that allotted time. “Semtex” said that he knew he was overweight before stepping on the scales but not to the extent that he was.
“I knew arriving here at the weigh ins I was a little bit overweight,” said Daley. “I didn’t know exactly what until I stripped down and checked on the official scales. I didn’t think it would be as much as it was. I think, given the hour, I would’ve made the weight but with my scales being out it was a little bit more than we predicted and we wasn’t able to shift that weight in the hour we was given.”
“Semtex” and Masvidal will square off on the main card of Shark Fights 13: Jardine vs. Prangley which is going down this evening at the Amarillo Civic Center in Amarillo, Texas.
