UFC middleweight fighter Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort recently issued a challenge to heavyweight champion boxer James “Lights Out” Toney via his Twitter account to meet in the ring under boxing rules. Toney recently tried his hand at MMA, taking on Randy Couture at UFC 118; after he lost that bout in the first round, Toney issued a challenge to Couture and other MMA fighters to meet him on his turf. Belfort took the challenge to heart and posted on his Twitter a challenge of his own.
“Dana let me fight James Tony on 6 round boxe Mach I think I can catch him with my speed,” Belfort recently wrote to UFC President Dana White.
Shortly after, Belfort also posted, “Dana will be the 1 boxing match in Ufc I promise he will fell my power and we will show the world the a Ufc fighter can do better.”
Regardless of the unlikelihood of this match up (which White has yet to comment on), hype surrounding the fight is already beginning to build as James Toney recently responded to Belfort’s challenge with commendation and enthusiasm.
“Tell Vitor Belfort let’s make it happen,” Toney recently told FightHype.com. “I like that because he ain’t no scared little b****. He wants to come to my world and I’m more than willing to welcome him into my world.”
Toney is the current IBA and NABO heavyweight champion and will likely be defending his IBA strap sometime this year. The talented 42-year old boxer failed in his attempt at MMA victory (though he picked up a big paycheck in the process) but showed guts for stepping into the deep waters of MMA. Dana White will almost assuredly not allow a potential title contender in Belfort to take on Toney under boxing rules but the prospect of the matchup is slightly interesting if nothing else.
