New UFC heavyweight James “Lights Out” Toney will be acting as boxing’s ambassador when he takes on MMA legend Randy “The Natural” Couture this weekend at UFC 118. If Toney has spent even half of the time he has devoted to trash talking on training he will stand a real chance come Saturday evening. “Lights Out” has done his best Chael Sonnen over the past few months leading up to this bout and shows no sign of slowing down in the last days leading up to the actual fight. Toney recently spoke with MMAFighting.com about Couture and also about UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, whom Toney has asserted is a “chicken.”
“I seen fear,” Toney said of his first staredown with “The Natural.” “I smelled it, too. Everybody could see it. People thought Randy was tough, Randy was cool. All of the Randy Couture fans were like, ‘Ooh, ahh.’ But get up close and personal and you would have seen fear in his eyes. He ain’t never seen nobody like me before in his life.”
Toney has carried an unshakeable aura of confidence with him throughout the preparation for this fight based on his belief in his boxing skills. Toney reiterated that belief and stated that Couture could get himself hurt if he tries to stand up and trade with him.
“If Randy stands and trades, he’s going to get knocked the f— out, straight up, period,” he said. “And you see in my other fights, if I don’t knock you out, I f— you up real bad.”
The multiple-time, multiple-division boxing champion also took aim at UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar whom he believes does not represent the UFC well as a champion and displayed cowardice in his recent title defense against Shane Carwin.
“I’ll tell you right now, Brock has no heart,” said Toney. “Everybody seen what he did his last fight. He turned his back and ran like a chicken.”
“Lights Out” also asserted that Lesnar’s belt doesn’t mean as much as his own International Boxing Association and North American Boxing Organization heavyweight belts.
“Brock Lesnar is only the champion of the UFC,” said Toney. “I’m the heavyweight champion of the world.”
Still, Toney does have some love for MMA and it is mostly directed at the sport’s fans; “Lights Out” revealed that he has enjoyed the enthusiasm MMA fans display for their chosen sport and even said that boxing could benefit from such enthusiasm.
“People say I hate MMA fans. I don’t hate MMA fans,” he said. “I think y’all have some of the best fans in the world. They’re like soccer fans, crazy as f—. I love them. That’s how it used to be in boxing. We need that back.”
Toney will take on Couture this Saturday night in the co-main event of UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn II which is going down at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.
