MMA fans bore witness to an epic, legend-making bout earlier this month when UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva defended his belt against brash challenger Chael Sonnen. Sonnen battered the champion for the majority of five rounds, only taking damage in the brief standup exchanges and when “The Spider” delivered slashing elbows from off of his back. It looked as though the UFC 185lbs division was moments away from seeing a new champion but the champion threw up a hail mary triangle choke in the fight’s waning moments that forced the challenger to submit. MMA fans and pundits alike have been calling for an immediate rematch between the two fighters almost as soon as the fight ended, and it look like they may get their wish.
UFC President Dana White recently appeared on ESPN’s SportsCenter and revealed that the person most likely to challenge for Silva’s belt next is Chael Sonnen.
“Yeah, I think that’s the fight the fans want to see” White responded when asked if he is working on the Silva-Sonnen rematch.
The fight seemed to be the most obvious to make in the division except for the presence of Vitor Belfort who had already been granted a title shot but was forced to bow out due to injury. White mentioned Belfort’s presence in the division but still maintained that Sonnen will likely be next up for Silva.
“We’ve got some interesting fights in that division, Vitor Belfort’s still out there,” said White, but he added, “I’m looking toward the Chael Sonnen rematch, yes.”
White indicated that the rematch will most likely take place sometime this winter after Silva heals from a rib injury that he sustained prior to the fight. After his unprecedented trash-talk tirade leading up to UFC 117, it will be interesting to see how Sonnen chooses to promote the rematch.
