Daniel Cormier Talks Win Over Jason Riley, Discusses Next Appearance

Strikeforce heavyweight fighter and former Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier earned his fifth win (his second within the month) as a professional fighter in as many fights last night at Strikeforce: Houston against Jason Riley. Cormier has kept up a rapid-fire pace, having fought five times in his first year as a mixed martial artist; he spoke with’s Ariel Helwani after the fight about his hurried pace and offered his thoughts on the fight.

“No fights next week as of right now,” Cormier said when jokingly asked if he would be fighting again this month. “But you know what the funny thing is Ariel? Bob [Cook] just told me if somebody calls, I’m fighting.”

The American Kickboxing Academy team member also briefly broke down his fight against Riley, which he won by first round Submission (punches), and expressed an enthusiasm for the current path his MMA career is traveling.

“It was a fast fight, it was a good fight,” said Cormier. “I landed a good punch and he went down. I don’t know what else to say. I’m just excited. I’m really excited about the way this is going, the way it’s progressing.”

Cormier also expressed that he is happy fighting for Strikeforce because they offer him frequent fights; a key, says the 31-year old, for him to gain the necessary experience in order to catch up.

“My pace has to be sped up because I am 31,” he said. “I don’t regret that I’m starting late because I achieved my goals of going to the Olympics as a wrestler. But I have to be going faster and–five fights in a year so far. My first year isn’t until Sepetember, Ariel. So five fights in a year, I’m happy with the way it’s went.”

Cormier’s next appearance is rumored to come against Soa Palelei this November 6th at Xtreme MMA 3 in Sydney, Australia but he told Helwani that the fight is not yet a done deal and that he isn’t exactly sure when fans will next see him in action.

“I’m not sure man,” Cormier said of when his return to action will come. “Bob will make that decision. Right now, Australia is on the table, I’m not sure if he’s booked it yet. I don’t know if they’re jumping the gun over there or if it’s official. If it’s official then I’ll go fight.”
