Talented UFC welterweights Paulo Thiago and Diego Sanchez are set to meet in the cage this October at the upcoming UFC 121 event and things are already starting to get heated between the two. Fighters Only magazine got their hands on a recent Paulo Thiago interview with Brazilian MMA news source Tatame where Thiago responded to Sanchez’s promise of giving him a “nightmare” come October 23rd.
“He can say what he wants, he’s in the same situation as me,” said the BOPE (Brazil’s equivalent to SWAT) squad member. “In fact his is even worse, he’s coming from two losses, so his job depends on this fight. Both of us will give our best, this nightmare thing is bulls***. If it’s up to me, if someone will get fired, it’ll be him.”
Thiago and Sanchez are both coming off of losses, Thiago having dropped a unanimous decision to Martin Kampmann and Sanchez having lost via TKO in a lightweight title fight against former champ BJ Penn then, after moving back up to welterweight, posting a unanimous decision loss to dynamic UK welterweight John Hathaway.
Though Thiago insists that he isn’t worried about Sanchez’s threats, he does give “The Nightmare” props on his talents as a fighter.
“He jumps around during the fight all time, has a great conditioning,” he said. “The thing is I have to work on my conditioning to hold him through all the fight and work a lot on my hitting and ground game, so that I get at my best, because he’s dangerous.”
Thiago and Sanchez will meet on the main card of the upcoming UFC 121: Lesnar vs. Velasquez card. UFC 121 is expected to go down this October 23rd at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
