Former World Wrestling Entertainment superstar Bobby Lashley is set to make his second appearance in the Strikeforce MMA promotion this evening at Strikeforce: Houston where he will take on relative unknown Chad Griggs. Lashley recently spoke with MMAWeekly.com to offer his thoughts on facing Griggs and whether or not he thinks it a hindrance to be facing an opponent with whom he isn’t familiar.
“I don’t know very much about him at all,” Lashley said “I saw a glimpse of him online of what he’s done. I’ve seen pictures of him holding titles, so I know he’s beaten someone. I know he has a pretty good record. That’s all I really know of him.”
Far from hurting him, Lashley actually thinks that he has benefitted from facing off against an opponent whose dangers aren’t known; he has been forced to train hard in all areas of the game.
“I think it makes you train better. Sometimes when you get a lot of tape on someone you almost get tunnel vision and you expect certain things and you want to train a certain way,” he said.
Lashley told MMAWeekly that he plans to continue training that way for the foreseeable future so that he will continue to improve as an overall mixed martial artist.
“I don’t want to be like that right now,” said Lashley. “I want to be able to train everything, and that’s what I’ve been doing,” added Lashley. “I still need to work on everything, so I think it’s good to not have one specific thing and honing in on one specific aspect of this fight. I think for me, kind of being early on in my career, I don’t want to train a certain way. I know he really likes to come out there and brawl, and if a brawl is what he wants that’s what he’s going to get. I’m coming to fight.”
Lashley will find out what Griggs brings to the table this evening when they square off on the main card of Strikeforce: Houston at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
