WEC 50: Chad Mendes Vs. Cub Swanson

Chad Mendes vs. Cub Swanson

Round 1: Mendes rocked Swanson with a punch early. Swanson missed a punch and Mendes took Swanson to the ground. Swanson got into side control. Mendes kept control, but wasn’t able to do much damage. After a couple of minutes, both fighters were stood up. Mendes got the better of the stand up when they were back to their feet. Mendes caught a kick and scored another takedown, but Swanson was up quickly this time. Mendes pegged Swanson with a right. Swanson came in with a flying knee, only to be taken down again as the round came to a close. FightLine.com scores the round 10-9 for Mendes.

Round 2: Mendes landed a low kick and a punch and scored a single leg takedown. Mendes looked to let go and both fighters were back to their feet. Swanson started landing some punches and kicks. Mendes landed a couple of shots of his own, but Swanson looked like he was finding his rhythm. Mendes scored another takedown and got in Swanson’s full guard. Swanson almost got back to his feet, but Mendes put him back on the mat. Mendes landed a couple of scattered elbows and stayed in control. Swanson was able to get back to his feet and went for a guillotine attempt, but Mendes was able to defend. Swanson missed a high kick as the round ended. Round 3: Swanson slipped early and Mendes took Swanson to the ground pressed him against the cage. Swanson got back to his feet and both men went back to the center of the cage. Mendes with another takedown and into Swanson’s guard. Swanson was going for a omaplata, but Mendes was able to avoid it. Swanson finally got back to his feet and went for a flying knee,only to be taken back to the ground. Swanson got back up and started swinging for the fences and avoided another single leg. Swanson landed a leg kick, but was taken back to the mat. Mendes finished the round on top of Swanson. FightLine.com scores the round 10-9 for Mendes.

Chad Mendes defeated Cub Swanson via unanimous decision (scores of 30-27,29-28,29-29).

After the fight, Mendes said he’d been working on his standup but stayed with his wrestling where he was most comfortable.
