Mackens Semerzier, Javier Vasquez Discuss Upcoming Fight

WEC featherweights Mackens “Da Menace” Semerzier and Javier Vasquez are set to meet this August 18th at WEC 50: Cruz Vs. Benavidez 2 and both men will be looking to net victories to push themselves one rung further up the featherweight ladder.

Semerzier, 7-1 as a pro, burst onto the international scene when he took a fight against Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Wagnney Fabiano on late notice in what would be his WEC debut. Semerzier shocked the world by submitting Fabiano with a triangle choke in the first round. In his return bout, the Virginia Beach-stationed fighter would come up short against Deividas Taurosevicius, losing a unanimous decision. After being forced to pull out of a scheduled bout with Anthony Morrison with a rib injury, Mack is finally healthy and ready to repeat the performance he had against Fabiano.

”Javier has a fast, explosive game with a wrestling influence,” said Semerzier. “His game is just as dangerous as Wagnney’s, if not more so. He’s all-around good. I think I have some physical advantages on him and I’ll try to exploit that. I have more invested in my situation now so this is a more important fight than my fight with Wagnney. I’m better prepared this time. I’ve had more time to prepare and I’m not injured.”

Vasquez, a BJJ black belt, is coming off of a high-profile submission win over MMA legend Jens “Lil Evil” Pulver; a victory which broke a two-fight losing streak where he posted split decision losses to L.C. Davis and Deividas Taurosevicius. The confident grappler respects Semerzier, but believes that his skills are superior to the Pedro Sauer purple belt.

“He’s pretty good,” said Vazquez. “He’s still learning. I mean, we’re all learning – but I definitely feel a little bit ahead in my skill set than he is. We both supposedly lost to the same guy (Taurosevicius) so I’m curious to see who wins. I definitely think I’m better in all aspects of MMA. “I’ve lost two close fights which I’m not very happy about, so I have to go out and do what I have always done. Nothing has changed: My goal is to finish guys.”

Semerzier and Vazquez will square off on the preliminary card of WEC 50 which is going down this August 18th at The Pearl at the Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada.
