According to Five Ounces of Pain, son of MMA legend Randy “The Natural” Couture, Ryan Couture, made his professional mixed martial arts debut last night at Strikeforce Challengers 10 in the lightweight division. Couture, who names Brazilian jiu-jitsu as his primary strength, took on 2-4 Lucas Stark and scored a first round triangle choke submission victory over the tough young competitor.
“It’s kind of a load off to get the first win and I hope there won’t be a long wait for the next one and I can show some new things next time,” Couture said post-fight. “I thought once it hit the ground I would catch him but I didn’t expect it to be that quick. I just lucked out that way I guess.”
The youngest of the fighting Coutures was having some difficulty establishing his striking game during the fight and as such decided to get the fight to where he is most comfortable: the mat.
“I decided to get where I was comfortable and get it to the ground,” said Couture. “I’m a slow starter when it comes to the striking. I just locked it in and got the tap.”
Now 1-0 as a professional MMA fighter, expect to see Ryan Couture back in action on another Strikeforce Challengers card soon. Couture was no doubt aided in this fight by the fact that his father was in his corner and, for his part, “The Natural” said that he is proud of his son and expects good things from him in the future.
“I’m very proud of him and he has a great passion for the sport,” said “The Natural.”
