Eddia Alvarez Has New Opponent At Bellator 33

According to reports, a shoulder injury will force Bellator Fighting Championships Season 2 winner Pat Curran out of his lightweight title bout with champ Eddie Alvarez at Bellator 33. The start-up MMA organization didn’t have to look too far to find a superstar sub, as former UFC stud Roger Huerta has agreed to make the October 21st appointment.

Multiple sources close to the situation alerted Thursday evening that an official announcement regarding the non-title affair should be coming shortly.

Bellator hosted a pair of eight-man lightweight tournaments in their first two seasons. Alvarez took the trophy home the first year, while Curran threw a wrench in the organization’s plans by upsetting Huerta to earn the top contender spot this past May.

Huerta was one of the world’s best lightweights just a few years ago, however has fallen on some hard times having dropped three of his last four scraps. He held an impressive 21-1-1 record before his current skid

Alvarez, on the other hand, will be riding a five-fight winning streak into their highly anticipated contest. He’s notched wins in 10 of his last 11 outings, with his submission loss to Dream lightweight champ Shinya Aoki marking his sole blemish during his current run.

FOX Sports Net will broadcast the October 21st show. Kansas City and Philadelphia are the front-runners to host the card.
