Despite Chael Sonnen’s utter domination over UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva only to be caught with minutes left in the fight, UFC President Dana White remains unsure over the company’s next move.
“It’s definitely a rematch people would want to see,” said White at the UFC 117 post-fight press conference. “We can definitely do a rematch. It was awesome. I love the fact that Chael went out and talked the smack that he did, the way that he talked about this fight, and then went out and backed it up.”
While he is open to a rematch, White also noted that Vitor Belfort may get the next shot at Silva. Belfort was slated to meet Silva at UFC 112 in April, however had to withdraw from the bout due to a shoulder injury.
“We’ll see what happens,” said White. “Vitor [Belfort’s] waiting to fight right now, too. We could do the rematch with Chael. We’ll see what happens.”
Despite what happens next, White was all praise for both of the event’s headliners, a complete 180 from Silva’s last defense against Demian Maia at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi.
“The fight that happened tonight is the stuff that makes legends,” he said. “[Silva] got roughed up and beat up for almost five full rounds, but finds a way to win.”
“He came from being in deep water,” he continued. “Sonnen put himself on the map last week saying some crazy [expletive], and he put himself on the map again tonight.”
