“UFC 117: Silva Vs. Sonnen” Results

Dennis Hallman defeated Ben Saunders via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28).

Stefan Struve defeated Christian Morecraft via TKO (punches) at 0:22 of Round 1.

Tim Boetsch defeated Todd Brown via unanimous decision (29-28 across the board).

Johny Hendricks defeated Charlie Brenneman via TKO (punches) at 0:40 of Round 2.

Phil Davis defeated Rodney Wallace via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27).

Rick Story defeated Dustin Hazelett via TKO (punches) at 1:15 of Round 2.


Junior Dos Santos Vs. Roy Nelson

The UFC is starting off the main card with a bang with this heavyweight title eliminator between dos Santos and Nelson. “Big Country” enters the arena to “I’m Fat” by Weird Al Yankovic again, his mullet waving in all its glory. Dos Santos walks out to “Gonna Fly Now” (the Rocky theme) by Bill Conti and it’s every bit as epic as it sounds.

Round 1: They touch gloves and begin the feeling out process. Dos Santos whiffs a big one. Nelson misses a punch and drops to the ground for a takedown, he presses “Cigano” against the cage and tries relentlessly for the takedown. Dos Santos breaks the clinch after a few moments and lands a big knee. Nelson recovers and they meet in the middle. Dos Santos rocks Nelson with a big uppercut. Dos Santos is all over him, taking his time and battering the very game Nelson. “Big Country” is still in this but Dos Santos is taking his time with wounded prey. He nails another uppercut and Nelson cannot stay on his feet. Nelson gets back up and eats several knees for his trouble. Nelson fires back to let Dos Santos know that he’s still in this. “Cigano” still taking his time, Nelson still engaging Dos Santos despite his battered state. Dos Santos is picking his shots and landing clean but Nelson keeps moving forward, he’s looking to load up and land a big shot. Dos Santos landing consistently with his uppercut. The round ends with Dos Santos landing cleanly to Nelson’s face. scores the round 10-9 for Dos Santos

Round 2: Dos Santos still taking his time and landing clean. Nelson with a huge right hand, Dos Santos eats it and shrugs off a takedown attempt. Dos Santos fires back. Nelson pushing forward, trying to land. The pace has slowed a bit, especially on Dos Santos’ end. Dos Santos lands two big body shots, Nelson still loading up on his overhand right. Nelson trudging forward against all odds. Nelson goes for a takedown and almost bulls Dos Santos through the cage but Dos Santos deftly fights it off. They are still clinched against the cage. “Cigano” with a cut and some swelling under his right eye. Dos Santos takes a deep breath and shoots for his own rare takedown, it is shrugged off. Dos Santos lands a serious body shot. Dos Santos with a solid left hook. Nelson looking a little worse for the wear, he tries a takedown and Dos Santos shucks him off easily. The round ends with Dos Santos looking confused as to how to finish Nelson. scores the round 10-9 for Dos Santos.

Round 3: They touch gloves and start the round swinging. Nelson whiffs a big right. Dos Santos landing heavy combos and Nelson keeps looking to land the big right. Dos Santos with a solid front kick that touches Nelson chin. Dos Santos with yet another solid uppercut. Dos Santos shoots for a single leg and actually gets Nelson down. He backs off to let Nelson up and Nelson stays on one knee for a moment, Dos Santos backs off and they stand up to trade some more. Dos Santos easily avoids a big Nelson right hand. Nelson not looking like he’s going away but he’s not able to mount much offense at all. Nelson with a leg kick. Dos Santos still picking his shots, showing discipline. He lands a solid knee. Nelson taking a few steps back with some big, deep breaths. Dos Santos landing with combos to the body and head. “Cigano” with a knee against the fence. Dos Santos pours it on at the end but still can’t put Nelson down. scores the round 10-9 for Dos Santos.

The two men embrace and Nelson drops to the canvas. Dos Santos won this fight but Nelson made him work for it.

Junior dos Santos defeated Roy Nelson via unanimous decision (scores of 30-26, 30-27, 30-27)

Dos Santos gives all the props in the world to Nelson for his gameness, says he will be ready for the title shot he just earned. Great fight to start off the main card.

Matt Hughes Vs. Ricardo Almeida

Almeida’s walkout hat is several sizes too large but the fact that he is walking out to “Ball and Chain” by Social Distortion absolutely makes up for it. Hughes sticks to the very solid “Country Boy Can Survive” by Hank Williams. Josh Rosenthal is the third man in the cage.

Round 1: Hughes starts in the Orthodox stance as opposed to the Southpaw stance he has been using to facilitate his wrestling. The fight starts out with both men looking to strike, Hughes looking pretty solid with his kicks. They clinch briefly and Almeida lands a nice right on the break. So far they are pecking away at each other with Almeida getting the best of the brief clinch exchanges. Hughes drops Almeida with a big left hook. Hughes cinches up a front headlock choke on the dazed Almeida and puts him to sleep almost instantly.

Matt Hughes defeated Ricardo Almeida via technical submission at 3:15 of Round 1.

Hughes says he is taking off the fall to hunt. Big win for the recently inducted UFC Hall of Famer.

Clay Guida Vs. Rafael Dos Anjos

Clay Guida walks out looking as pumped up, positive and focused as ever, he slaps hands with Dos Anjos as he runs circles around the ring. The crowd continues its trend of booing the Brazilian fighters. Herb Dean is the referee for this match.

Round 1: Guida shakes his head at Dos Anjos when he offers his glove to touch. Guida lands a clean head kick but Dos Anjos takes it. Dos Anjos with a brutal inside leg kick. Guida gets the better of a nasty exchange, puts Dos Anjos on his heels but the Brazilian fires back with more solid inside leg kicks. Dos Anjos shoots for a double and Guida stuffs it, he turns it around and they fight against the fence. Dos Anjos fighting off Guida’s relentless takedown attempt but Guida is not letting go. They break and Dos Anjos lands a good knee. Dos Anjos with a solid left. Dos Anjos shoots again and is stuffed. Dos Anjos with a big uppercut to a successful takedown. Guida gets to his feet but eats a right hand for it. scores the round 10-9 for Dos Anjos.

Round 2: The second starts the same as the first with both men meeting right in the middle and trading shots. Guida working angles better but not landing much yet. The crowd loudly gets behind Guida with a rousing chant of “Let’s go Guida!” Guida stuffs a takedown attempt but is pressed against the cage. They break apart. Dos Anjos trying a variety of kicks with middling effect. Guida deftly lands a double leg takedown. Dos Anjos immediately looks for an Omoplata but Guida breaks out of it easily. The ground scramble ensues with both men staying furiously busy to prevent the other’s offensive attempts. Guida gets into half guard, he is bleeding from somewhere. Dos Anjos regains guard by going for an Omoplata again. Close round. scores the round 10-9 for Guida.

Guida lets off a trademark burp.

Round 3: Guida is pushing forward early and while he isn’t landing with much significance he has Dos Anjos tentative. Guida goes for a takedown and after a few moments against the cage lands a big double leg. Guida in half guard landing some knees to the body. Somehow, Guida forces Dos Anjos to tap. It appears to be a problem with his jaw which his corner alluded to in between rounds. Looks like Dos Anjos has a broken jaw and as Guida pressured it with his shoulder the pain forced Dos Anjos to submit.

Clay Guida defeated Rafael Dos Anjos via Submission (Tapout) at 1:51 of Round 3.

Guida apologizes for injuring Dos Anjos. A replay is shown of Guida landing a very clean and jarring right hand on Dos Anjos’ jaw, the shot that possibly caused the injury.

Jon Fitch Vs. Thiago Alves

Fitch enters the cage looking fired up, touches gloves with Alves before Bruce Buffer gets going. Herb Dean is reffing this one.

Round 1: They touch gloves and start scrapping. Fitch tries a head kick and it’s blocked. Alves throws a kick and Fitch goes for the takedown, he gets it and gets Alves’ back against the fence. Alves standing up but Fitch is on him like glue. Fitch will not let Alves get up, he drags him back to the ground with relative ease. Alves reverses Fitch and puts the AKA product on his back. Alves in Fitch’s half guard. Fitch is neutralizing Alves’ ground offense and “Pitbull” lets him back up. Fitch with a good knee. Thiago looks a little bit slower than usual but he cracks Fitch with a good right. Fitch with a good body-head combination. Again. Alves stuffs a takedown. Fitch tries and gets the takedown this time. scores the round 10-9 for Fitch.

Fitch says in between rounds that Alves feels weak in the clinch. The drastic weight cut and long layoff may be taxing Alves here.

Round 2: Fitch with a takedown early. Alves trying to fight it off but Fitch is relentless. Fitch is on Alves like glue and although Alves is showing competent defense he cannot stop Fitch from controlling this bout. Alves looks less explosive and quick than usual; whether it is because of Fitch, the weight cut, the layoff or all three is unknown at this point. Not much offense here but Alves just can’t stop Fitch from bullying him. “Pitbull” turns Fitch over and pushes him away in favor of a standup fight. Alves coming forward with some solid combos. scores the round 10-9 for Fitch.

Alves needs a finish here to win this fight.

Round 3: Fitch moving well, lands a nice leg kick. Alves looking to land big. The fight is staying on the feet so far and Alves is looking much better than in the first two. He gets out of a takedown attempt by Fitch. Fitch gets a takedown and they fight for position against the fence. Fitch has Alves’ back with a body triangle. With 90 seconds left it’s not looking like Alves can score the miraculous finish he needs. Fitch looking for an arm triangle. Alves rolls Fitch over and lands in his guard with 45 seconds left. Ten to go and Alves is all over Fitch. Too little too late. The two men embrace, Alves looks disappointed. scores the round 10-9 for Fitch.

Jon Fitch defeated Thiago Alves via unanimous decision (scores of 30-27 across the board).

Anderson Silva Vs. Chael Sonnen for the UFC Middleweight Championship

Silva walks out in his gi with his black belt, smiling wide. Silva hugs Steven Seagal before “Stitches” applies the vaseline. Sonnen calling Silva to the cage and Silva ignores Sonnen as he circles the Octagon. The ref for this bout is Josh Rosenthal. The staredown is mild, they touch gloves.

Round 1: They immediately start fighting and Silva lands a one-two. Silva catches a kick and spins Sonnen around. The crowd chants “Silva.” Silva dumps Sonnen on his head and he somersaults backward. Sonnen rocks Silva with a punch and “The Spider backs up. Silva gets Sonnen to the ground and Sonnen uses a guillotine to stand up. Sonnen nailing Silva with hard shots to the face, Silva is hurt but is keeping his hands down. Sonnen hits a strong double and gets Silva to the ground. Sonnen in Silva’s half guard. Sonnen has Silva’s back and is landing solid shots from the top. Silva is fighting from the bottom but this is all Sonnen so far. Silva reestablishes full guard. Sonnen cracks Silva with a big right hand from the top. Sonnen traps Silva’s right arm. Silva back to full guard. Sonnen is pounding Silva from the top. Sonnen in side control. Sonnen dropping bombs from the top. Wow. scores the round 10-8 for Sonnen.

Silva won’t take the stool.

Round 2: Silva lands a nice leg kick and is looking to land big but Sonnen gets him right back to the ground. Silva with good elbows from the bottom. Sonnen gets into Silva’s half guard. The crowd now chants “USA.” Sonnen boxing Silva’s ears as Silva holds on to him, looking for the standup. Sonnen slamming Silva’s head to the mat. Silva is taking more damage in this fight possibly than he ever has. Sonnen peppering Silva with shots from the top. Silva with an elbow from the bottom. Silva is defending well from the bottom. Sonnen with a big left hand. Silva looking for submissions but Sonnen avoiding well. Sonnen landing constantly from the top. Silva looking for a kimura against the cage. Sonnen is relentless as the round ends. scores the round 10-9 for Sonnen.

Round 3: Silva with a big spinning back kick. Sonnen gets another takedown. Silva looking for a kimura again. Sonnen has Silva’s back but is not trying to put in the hooks. Sonnen kneeing Silva’s legs and throwing endless, peppering shots to Silva’s head. Silva rolls but Sonnen is right on top of him. The crowd chants “Sonnen.” Silva locks the body triangle in an attempt to slow Sonnen. Sonnen throwing rapid fire, short punches at Silva. Sonnen landing to the body. Silva is getting beat up here and he has very little answer for Sonnen’s attack so far. scores the round 10-9 for Sonnen.

Round 4: Silva lands a right and a flying body kick. Silva lands a solid elbow that buckles Sonnen. He shucks off a takedown. Silva brawling here, landing shots that have Sonnen backing up. He stops another takedown and gets on top of Sonnen. Sonnen reverses Silva and gets back on top. More of the same now. Sonnen pounding on Silva, not letting him up. More “USA” chants. Under two minutes to go and Silva cannot find an answer for Sonnen’s top control. Sonnen is puffed up and bleeding but winning this fight handily. scores the round 10-9 for Sonnen.

Round 5: Silva bouncing around and looking to exchange here. Silva gets rocked and hits the canvas. Sonnen all over him again. Sonnen is going for an arm triangle but Silva gets out of it. Joe Rogan says that after seeing a replay, it looks as though Silva slipped and was not rocked. Three minutes left with Sonnen on top, it looks like the UFC is about to get a new middleweight champion. Sonnen landing constantly from on top. Silva still has no answer. Silva throws up a triangle. Sonnen taps!!! The ref stops it but Sonnen protests the stoppage. The replay shows what looks like a tap from Sonnen but it is hard to say for sure. Strange end to a great showing by Sonnen.

Anderson Silva defeated Chael Sonnen via submission (triangle) at 3:10 of Round 5.

Silva bows to Sonnen and embraces him. Silva gives props to Sonnen. Silva says that his ribs were hurt and that the doctor did not want him to fight but that for the fans and for the UFC, he fought. Sonnen admits that he came up short and in second tonight, seems to admit that he tapped. Crazy stuff.
