The co-main event for UFC 117 just lost a lot of it’s luster after Thiago Alves was unable to make the 171-pound weight limit for his welterweight top contender bout with Jon Fitch.
The massive Brazilian originally tipped the scales at 171.5 pounds and remained at that weight for two more attempts. After it was determined he would be unable to lose the additional half-pound, the organization announced Alves will compete at that weight tomorrow but will be forced to fork over 20 percent of his “show” purse.
We should have known something was rotten in the state of Denmark when Alves pulled a no-show at the UFC 117 open media work outs on Wednesday. Reports surfaced that he requested to be excused in order to concentrate on hitting his mark at today’s weigh-ins.
During yesterday’s pre-fight press conference, Alves addressed the issue and promised it wouldn’t be a problem by the time Friday’s weight competition rolled around.
