Legendary mixed martial arts referee “Big” John McCarthy will finally be returning to officiate bouts for the UFC, according to MMAFighting’s Mike Chiapetta.
McCarthy, who retired from refereeing to pursue other MMA-related avenues in 2007, practically wrote the book on MMA officiating and was for many years the UFC’s head referee. The former Los Angeles Police Officer last took the position of third man in the Octagon in December of 2007 where he reffed the very entertaining showdown between lightweights Roger Huerta and Clay Guida. That fight took place at The Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale.
MMAFighting spoke with McCarthy’s wife, Elaine, who informed them that “Big” John does not yet know which bouts he will be officiating and also that he will not be speaking publicly about his return to the UFC at least until after the fight.
McCarthy’s relationship with the UFC was strained due to negative comments that he had made about the organization post-retirement and even though he came out of retirement in 2008, he would not officiate for the UFC again until now. UFC On Versus 2 is going down this August 1st and will be headlined by light heavyweights Jon Jones and Vladimir Matyushenko.
