Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker recently explained how he plans on handling his 185-pound division with the imminent departure of reigning middleweight champ Jake Shields.
Coker had inquired with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation about holding a four-man tournament for the title at “Strikeforce: Houston” on August 21st, but his efforts were quickly shot down.
“They told me the reason they had stopped (allowing) tournaments was because of the Toughman contests,” Coker told Sherdog.com.
Many believed that’s what prompted Strikeforce to immediately move forward with a middleweight title match between Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Tim Kennedy for the soon-to-be vacant crown. However, Coker claims everything has played out according to plan.
“We always felt that crowning a champion would be the first priority,” Coker stated. “We will host a tournament in October. It looks like the 1stRound will take place then, which will lead to the final four in December.”
